New Year New Career

If only it was that easy.

January naturally invites change and challenges us to do things differently. So I thought it might be useful to outline some of the things you could do to help you start digging out a new pathway for yourself.

Start with what you have got

Is there any way you could make your current job more interesting by tweaking your responsibilities, pitching new ideas, or volunteering for projects outside your usual scope? Sometimes, the changes we crave might already be within reach if we approach our current role with fresh eyes. Consider talking to your manager about ways to align your work with your strengths or passions.

Identify your transferable skills

One of the best steps you can take when considering a career change is to focus on what you already know and do well. Skills like communication, problem-solving, project management, and leadership are valuable in almost any industry. Take stock of your abilities and think about how they might apply in a different context. If you're unsure, try using online tools like a skills assessment or getting some support.

Explore YOU

Ask yourself: What excites me? What do I like doing in my free time that you wish you could get paid for?  Think about hobbies old and new, passions, or side hustles might hold clues to a fulfilling career. Research industries or roles that align with these interests, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people working in those fields for advice or insights. Informational interviews can be a goldmine of knowledge and inspiration.

Up skill strategically

If your dream career requires knowledge or experience you don’t yet have, start small. Enrol on an online course, attend workshops, or seek certifications that can boost your credibility. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, and Udemy make it easier than ever to learn at your own pace. Consider volunteering or taking on freelance projects to gain hands-on experience. Even small steps can signal to potential employers that you're serious about making the leap.

Update your CV or LinkedIn profile

When was the last time you updated your CV or LinkedIn profile? A polished, up-to-date online presence can make all the difference when you're pivoting to a new career. Highlight achievements, skills, and experiences that are relevant to the roles you’re targeting. Consider writing a few posts or articles about topics that interest you in your desired field—this not only demonstrates your enthusiasm but also helps you stand out.

Build your network

I know, many of us hate the thought of doing that but we all know it is true -“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” While skills and experience are essential, connections can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Attend networking events, join professional groups, and engage on social platforms like LinkedIn. The more people you connect with, the greater your chances of learning about opportunities or getting a foot in the door.

Take the first step and the rest will follow

The idea of switching careers can feel overwhelming, but remember, you don’t need to have everything figured out right away. Start with small, manageable actions—even if it’s just researching roles, scheduling a conversation with a mentor, or drafting a new CV. Momentum builds with each step you take, and before you know it, you’ll be closer to the career you’ve envisioned.

Changing careers is never without its challenges, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to grow and find a path that excites you. As you set your goals for the year ahead, remember: the most important thing is to start. Here’s to discovering a career that truly feels like yours in the months to come!
