How would I even know I need support from a Careers Coach

Updated: Oct 10, 2024

This I think is a superb question, and one that I thought about for sometime.

I don’t think anyone actually gets out of bed and thinks ‘I know I need a Coach’. It is not as black and white as I feel unwell, I need to call the doctor.

So I thought it might be quite useful to identify 5 reasons why and when it might be useful to talk to a Career Coach

1) You have applied for countless jobs but never got offered an interview?

This should be a warning bell, something is wrong. But knowing what is wrong is often difficult to detect. There could be a number of things that aren’t quite right. You are applying for the wrong type of job to match your experience; you are applying for the right job but not matching your experience appropriately; you have not met the essential requirements; you are significantly underqualified; you are significantly over qualified; the job is perfect for you but you are not selling yourself appropriately.

2) Your CV is three pages long and lists all the key jobs you have done

Many people have what is called a Chronological CV which outlines their key career moves from school to college/university and beyond. This logically should therefore be appropriate for most jobs. However, this could not be further from the truth. For every job you should be tailoring your CV to meet the requirements of the job. You can do this by looking for keywords from the person specification and putting them in your CV.

3) You manage to get interviews but never the job

This can be heartbreaking. What it demonstrates is, you are good at identifying jobs you can apply for, you are good at application forms, however, your interview technique is not quite polished. Interview practice is essential for people who get very nervous before a job, and for people who have not had an interview for a long time,

4) You know you can’t do this same job for another year

Being stuck in a job is soul destroying. It can sap your energy, make you low and at its worst start to affect your mental health. Being stuck is often a feeling but doesn’t need to be a reality. Just because you can’t see a way out of a career that you have had for a long time, it doesn’t mean a route out doesn’t exist. I have seen the effect an hour’s interview can have on someone's life. It is wonderful

5) You know you have always wanted to be a XXX but just don’t know how to get into that career

Many people know exactly what they want to do, they have the right experience and skills but simply don’t know how or where they can gain the qualification or what qualification they need to take to move further up the career ladder. There are grants, bursaries, part-time, online courses, courses aimed at mature students etc that many people are simply unaware of. This lack of information could be the only thing that is holding you back.
